Danzhou

The cultural heart of western Hainan, rich in poetry heritage and featuring the massive Ocean Flower Island resort development.

About

Danzhou, located on the northwest coast of Hainan Island, is the economic, cultural and transportation hub of western Hainan. With a history spanning over two thousand years, it has long been known as the "Poetry Village" and "Chinese Couplets Town" for its rich literary traditions. The city is famously associated with Su Dongpo, the revered Song dynasty poet who spent three years in exile here and left an enduring cultural legacy.

Modern Danzhou has undergone a dramatic transformation. The construction of Ocean Flower Island, a 1.8 trillion yuan artificial island resort development, has put Danzhou on the international tourism map. Combined with the Hainan Free Trade Port policies, the city is positioning itself as a major destination for both tourism and investment.

History & Development

Danzhou has a recorded history of over 2,000 years, dating back to the Han dynasty when it was first established as a county. Its most famous historical figure is Su Dongpo (Su Shi), the renowned Song dynasty poet, calligrapher, and scholar-official, who was exiled to Danzhou in 1097 and spent three years teaching local residents and composing poetry.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Danzhou became an important port for trade along the Maritime Silk Road. In the modern era, Danzhou was selected as a key development zone under Hainan Free Trade Port framework, with the Yangpu Economic Development Zone becoming a major petrochemical and shipping hub.

Economy & Industries

Danzhou economy is driven by tourism, petrochemicals, shipping logistics, and tropical agriculture. The Yangpu Economic Development Zone, located within Danzhou administrative area, is one of Hainan key industrial zones, hosting oil refining, ethylene production, and port operations. Ocean Flower Island has become a major tourism driver, attracting millions of visitors annually.

The city GDP reached approximately 100 billion yuan in 2023, with the service sector growing rapidly as tourism infrastructure expands. Traditional industries include salt production, tropical fruit cultivation, and aquatic products processing. Fishing remains an important livelihood along the 300-kilometer coastline.
