Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in Lijiang — the sacred mountain of Naxi people
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain — 13 snow peaks stretching into the sky, the sacred mountain of the Naxi people and a must-visit for any Yunnan trip.

Why Yunnan

Yunnan — the Land of Colorful Clouds. The Spring City of Kunming, Erhai Lake's endless blue, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain's eternal snow, and Shangri-La's Tibetan mystique. This is China's most diverse province — 25 ethnic minorities, snow-capped mountains, tropical rainforests, ancient tea routes, and landscapes that look like paintings.

My first trip to Yunnan was in 2019, and I've returned several times since. Each visit brings new discoveries. Yunnan is a place that demands slow travel — cycling around Erhai Lake, wandering through Lijiang's ancient streets, lying on Shangri-La's grasslands watching clouds drift by. Ten days is just enough to fall in love with this land of gentle beauty and vast horizons.

With 240 hours (10 days) of visa-free transit, you can experience the classic route: Kunming → Dali → Lijiang → Shangri-La. This guide is not a "see 20 attractions in 3 days" speed run — it's a slow journey to truly feel the rhythm of Colorful Clouds.

Beyond Kunming

Yunnan has much more than just Kunming:

  • Kunming: Spring City, year-round mild weather, Dianchi Lake, Green Lake Park, Stone Forest
  • Dali: Erhai Lake, Ancient City, Xizhou Ancient Town, Shuanglang
  • Lijiang: Ancient City, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Blue Moon Valley, Shuhe Ancient Town
  • Shangri-La: Tiger Leaping Gorge, Pudacuo, Songzanlin Monastery
  • Xishuangbanna: Tropical rainforest, Dai culture (limited time, not included in this itinerary)
  • Tengchong: Volcanic hot springs, Ginkgo Village (limited time, not included in this itinerary)

Ten days is perfect for the classic route: Kunming → Dali → Lijiang → Shangri-La — snow mountains, lakes, and ethnic minority cultures all in one trip.

Kunming Must-See Attractions

Dianchi Lake — Highland Pearl

Dianchi Lake, also known as Kunming Lake, is Yunnan's largest freshwater lake — a 300 sq km highland lake at 1,886m elevation, surrounded by mountains. Every winter (November to March), thousands of black-headed gulls migrate from Siberia, circling above Haigeng Dam — Kunming's most moving winter scene. Xishan Dragon Gate on the western shore offers panoramic views of the lake. At sunset, golden light shimmers across the water.

Green Lake Park — Kunming's Back Garden

Green Lake Park sits in the city center — a centuries-old free park beloved by locals. The emerald-green lake covers half of its 21 hectares. In winter, black-headed gulls gather here, making it the most convenient spot in Kunming to see them. The park is surrounded by cultural sites: Yunnan University, Military Academy, and Yuan Jiagu's former residence are all within walking distance.

Stone Forest — Karst Wonder

Stone Forest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and World Geopark — the "First Wonder of the World." This 350 sq km karst landscape was formed from seafloor limestone over 200 million years ago. Walk through a forest of stone pillars — some like swords thrusting skyward, others like mushrooms, still others like animals. The most famous is "Ashima" stone pillar, legendary incarnation of an Yi girl.

Kunming Old Street — Old Kunming Flavor

Kunming Old Street is the city's most historic district, preserving Republican-era architecture and old Kunming life. Qing-brick gray-tile buildings line the streets. Wenming Street has creative shops and cafes; Guanghua Street is where old-time snacks gather; Jingxing Street is famous for its flower and bird market. Sample douhua rice noodles, roasted tofu, fried potatoes, and papaya water — authentic old Kunming flavors.

Dali Ancient City was built in 1382 and served as the capital of Nanzhao and Dali kingdoms. Backed by Cangshan Mountain and facing Erhai Lake, the city follows traditional Bai architecture — green tiles, white walls, flying eaves. Walk Foreigner Street for cafes, Renmin Road for folk music bars, and climb Wuhua Tower for panoramic views.

Built in the 9th century, the main pagoda stands 69.13m tall with 16 tiers; two smaller pagodas are each 42.19m. They've survived a thousand years of wind, rain, and earthquakes. The white pagodas reflected in the temple's pond create Dali's classic photo.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain — Naxi Sacred Mountain

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is Lijiang's iconic landscape — the sacred mountain of the Naxi people. Thirteen snow peaks stretch across the sky like a silver dragon. The main peak, Shanzi Peak, reaches 5,596m — the southernmost modern glacier in the Northern Hemisphere. Take the large cableway up to Glacier Park at 4,506m to see the glacier up close. At the foot lies Blue Moon Valley, with water so blue it's called "paradise on earth."

Blue Moon Valley — Paradise on Earth

Blue Moon Valley lies at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain — a series of highland lakes fed by glacial meltwater. The water is so blue it resembles sapphire, reflecting the snow mountain's image. Four lakes make up the valley: Yuye Lake (largest, bluest), Jingtan Lake (mirror-smooth), Blue Moon Lake (small waterfalls), and Tingtao Lake (famous for its sound). Walking along the wooden boardwalk, every step is a painting.

Lijiang Ancient City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, built in the late Song Dynasty over 800 years ago. The city's unique feature is "city exists by water, water follows the city" — clear streams flow through every street. Qinglong River flows through town; ancient stone paths extend into the distance. This was an important station on the Tea Horse Road. Compared to Lijiang's commercialization, Shuhe preserves a more authentic Naxi lifestyle.

Legend says a tiger leaped across the river on a giant rock. Upper Tiger Leaping is easiest to reach, with viewing platforms to feel the river's roar. Middle Tiger Leaping is more spectacular but requires 3-4 hours of hiking. The gorge is also a hiker's paradise — the famous "Tiger Leaping Gorge High Trail" is one of the world's top 10 classic hiking routes.

Shudu Lake is the largest, surrounded by ancient forest; Bita Lake has an island you can reach by boat. Militang is a highland pasture where yaks and sheep graze in spring and summer. Golden roofs and red walls shine in the sun. Inside are hundreds of thangkas, Buddha statues, and scriptures — a treasure trove of Tibetan art.
