About

Wenzhou is a dynamic coastal city in southeastern Zhejiang Province, renowned as the birthplace of China's private economy. The city covers 12,065 square kilometers and has a population of 9.67 million, making it one of the most economically vibrant cities in the Yangtze River Delta.

The city's history spans over 2,000 years, dating back to the ancient Dong'ou Kingdom. Wenzhou's strategic coastal location made it a crucial maritime hub throughout Chinese history, and today it continues to be a center of commerce and entrepreneurship.

Wenzhou is famous for the "Wenzhou Model" of economic development, characterized by family-run businesses and private enterprises that have transformed the city into a manufacturing powerhouse. Products made in Wenzhou - from shoes to lighters - are exported worldwide, earning the city titles like "Shoe Capital of China."

Beyond its economic prowess, Wenzhou offers stunning natural attractions. Yandang Mountain, a UNESCO World Geopark, features dramatic peaks, cascading waterfalls, and ancient temples. Nanxi River, with its crystal-clear waters and historic villages, is considered the cradle of Chinese landscape poetry.

The city is also known for its unique dialect - Wenzhounese is considered one of the most difficult Chinese dialects to understand, with distinctive vocabulary and pronunciation that reflects the region's isolated history.

Wenzhou cuisine emphasizes fresh seafood and delicate preparation. Local specialties like fish balls, lamp-shaped cakes (dengzhan gao), and sticky rice breakfast showcase the city's culinary creativity. The warm, hospitable Wenzhou people welcome visitors to experience their vibrant culture and entrepreneurial spirit.

History & Development

Wenzhou's history spans over 2,000 years, beginning with the ancient Dong'ou Kingdom. In 192 AD, the area was established as Yongning County during the Eastern Han Dynasty. The name "Wenzhou" was adopted in 675 AD during the Tang Dynasty, meaning "warm prefecture" due to its mild climate.

During the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), Wenzhou became an important port city for maritime trade. The city's merchants developed extensive networks connecting China with Southeast Asia, laying the foundation for Wenzhou's commercial culture.

The Ming and Qing dynasties saw Wenzhou develop into a regional center of craftsmanship and trade. Local artisans became known for their skills in shipbuilding, paper-making, and ceramics. The city's isolated geography, surrounded by mountains and sea, fostered a unique regional culture.

The Opium Wars in the 1840s opened Wenzhou as a treaty port in 1876, bringing Western influences and modern industries. This period saw the establishment of modern education and healthcare facilities.

After 1949, Wenzhou remained relatively undeveloped due to its location near the Taiwan Strait frontline. This isolation ironically preserved its entrepreneurial spirit. When China launched economic reforms in 1978, Wenzhou was among the first cities to embrace private enterprise.

The "Wenzhou Model" emerged in the 1980s, characterized by family businesses, small-scale manufacturing, and extensive trade networks. Wenzhou entrepreneurs became famous throughout China for their business acumen and willingness to travel anywhere for opportunity.

Today, Wenzhou continues to be a leading center of private enterprise in China, with its businesspeople investing globally. The city balances its commercial dynamism with preservation of natural heritage at sites like Yandang Mountain and Nanxi River.

Economy & Industries

Wenzhou's economy is built on private enterprise and manufacturing. In 2023, the city's GDP reached 873 billion yuan. Known as the birthplace of China's private economy, Wenzhou has over 95% of its economy driven by private enterprises.

Manufacturing is the backbone of Wenzhou's economy. The city is China's "Shoe Capital," producing over 1 billion pairs annually. Other major industries include electrical equipment, automotive parts, and lighters - Wenzhou produces 70% of the world's lighters.

The "Wenzhou Model" of family businesses and private entrepreneurship has been studied worldwide. Wenzhou businesspeople have established commercial networks across China and internationally. Their willingness to travel and work hard has made "Wenzhou merchants" synonymous with enterprise.

Traditional industries include maritime trade, fishing, and agriculture. Wenzhou's coastal location provides abundant seafood, and the mountainous interior produces tea, citrus fruits, and olives. Modern industries include new materials, intelligent equipment, and digital economy.

Tourism is growing rapidly, with visitors attracted by Yandang Mountain's dramatic landscapes, Nanxi River's ancient villages, and coastal islands. The city's unique culture and cuisine also draw domestic and international travelers.
